影片改编自直木奖作家伊集院静的同名小说，讲述的爱犬死去的八岁女孩沙耶香（新津世知饰演），和多年前失去幼小儿子的老人布濑（笈田吉饰演)在交流重要家人离开的心情时，逐渐温暖内心的丧失感的感人故事。在濑户内海近海边荒岛上住着一对农民夫妇，他们有两个天真可爱的孩子。小孩非常听话，一起帮着料理家务。岛上严重缺水，周围都是咸水，一滴也不能用。因此，夫妇俩每天要从对岸运来饮用水，浇灌庄稼的水。每天拂晓就得起床，到对岸把水一担担的装上船，再浇灌到地里。但是庄稼长得不好。年复一年，他们开拓了一片又一片荒地。有时孩子们到海边钓到鱼都舍不得吃，都拿到集市上卖掉，换点钱吃顿好饭。一天，大儿子得了疾病，等夫妇俩从对岸赶回来，有驾船到对岸请来医生时，孩子早已断气了。夫妇俩怀着悲痛的心情火化了儿子，痛苦使他们更加痛苦沉默了，然而他们还是这样年复一年继续过这样的生活。。Tom, a married man with kids, is struggling at work when a client tries to seduce him with promises of a 'more exciting life'. On his way home one night he gets attacked by a gang of hoodies and falls into a parallel world where he lives 5 other lives including a Rock-Star, a Homeless person and the 'hoody' that attacked him. These lives help him to re-evaluate his priorities and values but in order to get home he must face some of his deepest desires and fears. Will he make it home or is the grass greener on the other side?。
